Detailed Guide to Putty & Cement Handling

Shipping and transportation of bulk building materials in the Odessa region has always been inextricably linked with the work of cargo ports. The total transshipment of cement, sand-cement mixtures and Portland cement in the south of Ukraine in 2019 increased by 3.5 times compared to 2018. Along with cement, the handling of putty and gypsum chips in the region for domestic consumption is growing. Also, the import of bulk building materials from abroad, in particular from Turkey and Egypt, is intensifying.

The infrastructure of cargo ports plays a decisive role in maintaining a stable trade turnover with foreign countries and between internal agents.
The transshipment complexes of TEK-TRANS GROUP FORWARD LLC have an advantageous position due to the exit of the railway line # 10, connecting it with the station Chornomorsk-Port. Close to them is an extensive open warehouse area of over 12,000 sq.m. It can accommodate hundreds of dry mortar (CCC) piece cargo in big bags and reload it both on trucks and open wagons.

All year round we carry out orders for the unloading and transshipment of construction raw materials for large developers, wholesalers of trade networks and manufactured goods markets. The choice in favor of the port transshipment of putty, gypsum, plaster and cement allows you to build a solid and streamlined logistics of goods in several directions. The proximity of the railway lines of communication and main roads to the terminal will provide the customer with several ways at once for delivering cargo to permanent storage sites or directly to construction sites.

How has putty handling in ports changed recently?

Activity in the housing construction sector in Ukraine has remained stable over the past 3-4 years. In addition, the data for the first half of 2019 indicate an increase of 35% in the field of non-residential construction and about 28% in the construction of engineering buildings and structures. Mirror to the start of construction and the pace of delivery of new facilities, the transshipment of dry mixes is also developing.

Transshipment of putty in the port is most often carried out for domestic trade and imports, and is a powerful link in logistics between the south, central and western regions. The noticeably increased demand for transshipment in big bags from domestic contractors is associated with the simplicity and low energy consumption for handling containerized cargo, instead of being transported in bulk. Also, a great contribution to the popularization of this method was made by the corresponding mechanization of cargo terminals and warehouses.

The main directions of transshipment of cement

In Ukraine, about 90% of dry mixes are produced and distributed within the country, in particular - cement. Over the past 3 years, the total volume of its own production has fluctuated around 9.1 million tons. The leading positions are kept by factories belonging to the CRH and Dikerhoff Cement Ukraine groups, as well as Ivano-Frankivsk and Krivorozhsky.

Expansion in consumption in the second half of 2019 led to a noticeable increase in exports, which added 57%. To a greater extent, the transshipment of imported cement falls on products from Turkey, in particular from the brands Kavcim, Adogim and Adana Cemento.

Transshipment in big bags: a profitable option for handling multi-ton lots of bulk building materials

Transportation of dry construction mixtures in the form of general cargo weighing 1.2-2 tons becomes easier when using big bags. These synthetic bags are made from high strength polypropylene fabric. To protect the contents from contact with air and liquids, the outer side of the fabric is laminated with a polymer film.
In addition, gypsum and cement-sand mixtures are protected from moisture by the inner liner of the big bag. It is made of dense and smooth high pressure polyethylene. Its structure is vapor-tight and can withstand seasonal temperature changes well.
As a container for storing and transporting, big bags are more convenient and practical than palletized cargo. All thanks to:
  1. Save loading time. According to the norms, Euro pallets can be loaded up to 2 tons. This corresponds to 50 bags of putty for 30 kg or 40 bags of cement for 50 kg. It is easy to imagine how time consuming it is to complete 1 pallet. That is why they are engaged in it when sending small / medium wholesale consignments within the range of 10-15 tons, which then go to retail. For quick delivery of large consignments of putty and cement directly to construction sites, it is easier to load the mortar into a big bag.
  2. Opportunities for storing sealed containers in open areas. You can store the putty in big bags until transfer to a freight train or road train in an open warehouse for up to six months. The same period is set aside for the storage of gypsum plaster such as Khauf Rotband. Binder dry mixes based on cement like Ceresit C11 tile adhesive, for example, can last a little longer - up to 1 year.
  3. Convenient transportation when unloading. When the transfer of the putty in big bags is completed, the container with the building mixture can be moved in several ways at once. A forklift, loader crane or electric hoist can be used to remove from the loading platform. For grabbing by lifting mechanisms, strong loop-slings are sewn on the bag. On the bottom of the bags, manufacturers sew special unloading valves, which are pinched with ties and covered with a lapel at the bottom.
